Several Yelm area RSE students have been inspired to join the monthly ‘Round the Poet’s Fire” gathering to bring their artistry to the community. The photograph above includes RSE students Judy Scott, Marie Light, Pamela Roberts-Aue, and Barbara Gay and others not pictured.
Their story was reported in the June 4th online edition of the Nisqually Valley News:
“Poetry is perhaps one of the most personal and intimate art forms as it offers a unique opportunity for the writer to express what they think, feel, see or experience in their own words, style and voice, with little to no rules standing in their way.

‘Everyone’s a poet, really,’ Michael Apau said. ‘Anyone that observes anything is a poet; they’re an artist of observation.’

Such is the case for around 20 Yelm area residents who gather on a monthly basis to share their work as well as share in the work of their fellow poets.

‘This is the crème de crème of, I think, all of Washington state,’ Triad owner Calamity Jayne said. ‘The group itself is powerful.’

Apau started the monthly gathering, dubbed ‘Round the Poet’s Fire, in July 2013. He began writing poetry in high school, but got more serious in 2010. He had been involved in poetry slams in Hawaii, but could not find anything similar in the Yelm area, and thus took it upon himself to create it,” quoting Jenna Loughlin, Nisqually Valley News.
