RSE: The Master’s Fund

May 2009

Master’s Fund Story of the year:

It was the first wheat pickup since the order had arrived. The response was incredible, with some people needing translators to express their gratitude.  One sweet soul had driven her vehicle to help friends load their buckets of wheat. In broken English she said, “I would like to give you a check.” I replied, “Oh, no, we don’t charge for the wheat, as it is a gift from fellow students who contributed to the Fund and remembered what it was like to just be starting their food storage.”

I noticed she had a twinkle in her eye and explained she didn’t personally need help with food storage and was there to help the others. Would I please take her check, she again asked. Another twinkle in her eyes and she said, “You no want?” Not wanting to offend, I replied I would be happy to take her check and thanked her. Then I looked down to discover she had written a check in the amount of ten thousand U.S. dollars! I first thought maybe she didn’t realize how many zeroes she filled in on the check until I spotted the handwritten words “ten thousand dollars.” Again the sparkling eyes and the question, “You no want?”

“Oh, yes,” I said, “I want!” That incredible night immediately got 10,000 times lighter inside me!
